Stephen 1st Foundation College is financed by the ARISZAK Foundation for Education. It provides for students of school age, from disadvantaged home backgrounds or children who come from one-parent families. These children fall behind their peer group when it comes to knowledge and understanding. Owing to the problems above, people of this target group are in increased need of individual care, outside of school. There are 104 children aged 5-19 studying at the Foundation, with 70% of them Romani children.

In 2001, with the help of the Cooperating Netherlands Foundations, the founder of Maholnap Foundation, they succeeded in accomplishing the external and internal reconstruction of the college building, and improved its supply of equipments. As a consequence, the students' attitude towards their environment has changed and caring for these comes more naturally to the pupils. In its pedagogical programme, the ARISZAK Foundation for Education puts great emphasis on improving the emotional, motivational components of learning, developing skills of speech (command of language), sense of phrasing, logical skills, as well as on the need of using pictures and tools.
By making the close-up project more effective not only do the school results of the children improve, but by creating an atmosphere of trust and understanding, self-estimation problems usually disappear, too. It also contributes to a successful integration into society.
The project has proved to be necessary and effective for many years now. Therefore by the support of the foundation, its maintainer, there is a permanent close-up programme for small groups and individuals, if necessary.
